To all loyal subjects of the Rude Dude persuasion...
Dudes, Update from Dude Central; This is what's been happening for the last few weeks... After finishing up pencils for Nexus "99, I went immediately into "commission-land". I finished up a large watercolor commission with Batman, Wonder Woman, and Superman. The funny part is, it was originally a commission idea that was rejected by an earlier commissioner who wanted the same thing but in a different setting. I always liked the idea that the earlier fan rejected, and apparently someone else did, too. So a week and few hours-of-picking later, I finished this old-idea-done-new, and it turned out great. Watercolor is still the most challenging medium for me, but thankfully it's also the fastest, since I need to get back to Nexus as soon as possible. After that was 2 more b & w commissions, (one for a cop friend who works the toughest gang territory in Phoenix. Oh, sorry--the Phoenix Chamber of Commerce didn't want me to mention that), and another Wonder Woman commission for devoted fan Scott Green, and I would be off to the land of Nexus. What happened after that was rather unexpected. I was suddenly called off to Dallas to do emergency work on the massive 200 pg. plus Art of the Dude book being published by John Fleskes of Flesk Publications. John and I have been devoting ourselves to this for a good 2 years now, and want this book out for San Diego this year. So off I flew to meet up with our Rude Dude designer, Mike Jones, who graciously agreed to help me help us out, and we literally worked, worked, worked, before I had to return home on Tuesday (yesterday). We got massive amounts of work done, but alas, the Dude's perfectionist standards were once again his own undoing and we ran out of time before it was finished. Fortunately, Mike Jones' accommodating nature took hold and we quickly arranged another visit 2 weeks from now to finish it up this tell-all coffee table book. It's a tough life, but somebody's got to do it. In the meantime, we have at last made some progress on our "lettering" situation, and recruited the award-winning efforts of Todd Klein to letter our first issue of Nexus. I haven't seen the lettering yet, but Todd is known as someone who passionately cares about his craft as much as the entire Rude Dude crew (that's hard to beat). Plus, he is one of the few existing people who still does lettering with an actual pen-nib (gasp) on the actual board! Whoa...I'll give you guys a moment to recover from this. Ready? Yeah, that's right. What the comic industry at large has largely decimated like the Dodo and Passenger Pigeon, the comics that we do are not going to let this time-honored art-form die in the tar-pits like some hapless Sabertooth. With us, the tradition will continue! Tradition!! On top of that, Gary Martin and I have figured out a devastating new origin for our character, The Silencer (soon to appear in the upcoming Amazing Dude Tales), and we finally have colorist Glenn Whitmore turning out updated pages for the Nexus free comic-book day special. Stunning work (like I gotta tell ya...) Finally, have you seen the ads that designer Mike Jones has been turning out from Mike Baron's ideas? You'll gasp collectively as loudly as Baron and I did! Check your latest Previews to see the amazing results! Soon we'll have all 1,000 of our competitors weeping in their cubicles! Anyway, I'm now off to begin Nexus #100, and I'm like, totally stoked, dude. So off to it am I! More later, The Humble Dude
