CONTINO Writer Mike Baron can't wait for
Nexus to return to the comic book shops. It's been over
ten years since Nexus' last appearance. Baron and
Steve Rude are returning full force with a four issue
limited series this July, but are giving Nexus fans and
potential new readers a taste of what made this character so
memorable on Free Comic Book Day. Baron also gives
PULSE readers a few teasers as well as a look at the
FCBD cover, so you'll know what to look for this May.
Baron said he was thrilled when he found out that Rude
was taking steps to bring Nexus back to the world of
comics. "When Dude told me he was forming his own publishing
company so we could get back into the fray you could have
knocked me over with a pixi stix," said Baron. "Nexus
last appeared in 1996. We've had ten years to grow as artists
and people. The result is the strongest Nexus series
I've written. There is no wasted space, no lack of direction.
The Dude has been waiting ten years to sink his pencils into
this story. The four issue series beginning in July is called
'Space Opera'. It's an intense story about serious
moral questions and a mind-blowing vision of the
future."
"The Free Comic Book DayNexus combines classic material with new observations,"
Baron continued. "I went through every issue and chose a
handful of vignettes meant to showcase Dude's art and what the
story is about. The story is always about moral uncertainty.
Do we have the right to kill? Whom? When? Where do our
loyalties and responsibilities lie? Humor runs through these
dark caverns like a streak of gold. There's one page in the
FCBDNexus that should probably be a poster. The
Guardian, Vooper, Robbie the Robot, Elvis, and Jack Kirby are
sitting around a table playing Texas Hold 'Em. Elvis and Kirby
are arguing about who's the King."
You can find out who
is the "King" of Free Comic Book Day this May. Steve Rude is
also offering something special for retailers who order copies
of the issue. He posted on his website that the top 1000 retailer
orders will get a free 18x24 poster advertising FCBD. He also
had something special planned for the top ten retailers.
According to the site, "[They will] receive a special care
package from Rude Dude central including a batch of Gino’s
famous homemade cookies! The Diamond Code is FEB070046."
